In the winter of 1838 - 39 the Cherokee Indians were driven away from their home in Georgia and were compulsory transfered into Indian territory. The long journey through cold and rainy weather became a deathmarch for over 13,000 men, women and children, who were forced to march over 1000 miles through Tennesse, Kentucky, Illinois, Missori and Arkansas. The march lasted nearly a year. The Indians were treated like animals , and they didnīt get enough food to eat. hunger and diseses were ravaging, and those who didnīt had more strengh to walk were left behind in the cold to die. this journey that cost 4000 Indians their life became an eternal memory as "Trail where they cried" for the Cherokees and other removed tribes. But are today known as the "TRAIL OF TEARS". |
