Before the Texas cowboys begun to herd cattles, things started to happen in California. Like Mexico and later on Texas California was under the Spanish flag.

In 1769 a Spanish Franciscan munk by the name of father Juniper Serre, came to California to teach the Indians Christianity.

The preasts brought with them cows and horses. At first the Spaniard took care of the cattles them self but as time go by the herds got bigger and bigger, and there was not enough people to take care of the animals.

The solution? Well the preasts decided to teach the Indians the cowboy work. So they gave the Indians rope and horses and taught them how to handle a lasso. The Indians were fast learners, soon they became real excperts on horseriding. And so were the American cowboy born.

And almost 50 years later the Texas cowboy road out on the big prairie in the Lone Star State...

Many western historian consider Californians as the first real American cowboys.
